26 July 1944 – a mission that should have never been flown
70 years ago this summer, poor command and control cost 2nd Lt. David Kerr his life, as well as those of nearly 13 heavy bomber air crews.
This is a tragic story on many levels. War is horrible enough as it is, but the loss of so many due to apparent oversight, is even worse. This mission was cancelled due to poor weather at the I.P. (after the bombers were airborne). Fighter support were not present.
Oberleutnant Hirschfeld is credited with the shoot-down of Kerr’s bomber. Ironically he was killed two days later when his plane was hit and his parachute failed to open. Another life lost due to someones lack of attention to detail.
My goal is to fund a marker in honor of him, and the brave airmen that went down with his plane, and the other B-17 he collided with near Gutenstein, Austria, July 26, 1944.
